A Canadian staple for 25 years, Indigo has been expanding their retail assortment from books and magazines to include increased offerings in home, wellness, gifting, and kids & baby. This change introduced complexity in the product catalogue, a challenge many retailers are facing. To handle the expanded product offerings and to keep pace with changing market demands, Indigo needed to modernize their tech ecosystem to support a vision for a future of flexible commerce.

Orium started by working shoulder-to-shoulder with the team at Indigo to understand the technology and processes for delivering commerce online and in store. Working directly with the digital, merchandising, and marketing teams, we assessed their ability to merchandise product thoughtfully, personalize each customer’s experience, and deliver seamless transactions and fulfillment using their current architecture.

With a full-spectrum view on their current architecture, pain points, and growth goals, the Orium team worked with Indigo to collaboratively design a target state architecture that would create the architectural runway needed to achieve Indigo’s vision. This included a phased roadmap on how best to transition while maintaining current operability for customers. Orium also provided vendor selection support for both CDP and CMS procurement to ensure that new vendors could meet Indigo’s needs and integrate seamlessly into an ecosystem of best-in-class headless solutions.

To equip Indigo with what they needed to begin this endeavour, Orium co-created architectural principles with engineering leaders and identified new ways of working that would remove impediments to delivering on the new vision.
